Newcastle United host Sheffield United in the Premier League on Wednesday and will be seeking revenge after losing 1-0 to the Blades in January. Ahead of the mid-week clash, Read Newcastle looked into one of Newcastle’s biggest wins in past head-to-heads and went all the way back to 1993.
On November 24 in 1993, the Toon Army enjoyed a 4-0 win over the Blades in front of more than 35,000 supporters at St James’ Park and Peter Beardsley was involved in every goal.
Kevin Keegan was manager and started Mike Hooper, Kevin Scott, Barry Venison, Steve Watson, Robbie Elliott, Paul Bracewell, Lee Clark, Rob Lee, Scott Sellars, Beardsley and Andrew Cole. They didn’t let him down.
Newcastle took the lead in the ninth minute when Sellars converted a Beardsley cross. Beardsley then scored from the spot minutes later after Sellars was fouled. Cole got in on the act midway through the second half after being teed up by Beardsley. And the Magpies’ fourth goal came from the latter just minutes later.
Whether Newcastle can repeat the feat on Wednesday remains to be seen, however.
In other news, this is the last time Newcastle beat Man City at St James Park
