Newcastle United drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Wednesday night and Federico Fernandez was one of many players praised for his performance. The 31-year-old lined up alongside Ciaran Clark and Fabian Schar at centre-back and played his part in the Magpies shutting out the defending champions.
Fernandez played his part in limiting Liverpool to only two shots on target each half on average and can be proud of keeping his third clean sheet in the Premier League. Supporters hailed his efforts on social media and showered him with praise.
Draw against liverpool, proved me wrong, we were good today, Clark, Fernandes and Schar were solid, wilson causing problems, darlow class, ritchie and matty playing it simple, joelinton running socks off, the performance I like to see #nufc

Have to say the team played so well tonight. Proper gritty attitude and every player was covering each other. Schar, Matty Longstaff, Fernandez and of course Darlow, they were the stand out performers ? #nufc

Fair play tonight, no complaints at all. Darlow has got to be knocking on Englands door. Excellent performances also from Schar, Fernandez and Wilson. #nufc ⚫️⚪️

Far better. Need to keep that intensity up against the weaker teams now rather than just sitting in. No excuses. Schär, Fernandez and Yedlin really good too I thought. #NUFC

One of the first to jump on board NUFC being rubbish, tonight so many good individual performances against the best in Europe. Darrow, Fernandez, Schar, Hayden, Matty and our proper No.9 Wilson were brilliant we rode our luck at times but we also created a few chances #NUFC

Saying that, our back 5, especially Schar/Fernandez/Clark were excellent. Surely Darlow has to be on England's radar ??♂️
Matt Longstaff too ?? he's got to stay in the team now.#NUFC

– Darlow for England!
– Matty like a Duracell battery & ice cool on the ball
– Schar back to his best
– Yedlin surprisingly good. Playing for a move or a new deal?
– Fernandez & Clark rock solid
– Wilson the full package. Energy, pace, power, intelligence#NEWLIV pic.twitter.com/zto8zrifxn— NUFCblog.co.uk (@NUFCblogcouk) December 31, 2020
Against Liverpool, Fernandez played for 90 minutes, had 54 touches, won four aerial duels, completed 60.7% of his 28 passes, whipping in three crosses, made seven tackles, gave away two fouls, made eight clearances and drew one freekick.
The Argentine international has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season. Fernandez has been on the winning team only four times in the Premier League but has shown he can stand up to the best of them on his day.
Newcastle have only picked up two points from a possible 12, but they’ll take a lot of confidence from shutting out Liverpool. Next up are Leicester City on January 3.
