Newcastle United drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Wednesday evening and Fabian Schar was one of many players who impressed at St James Park. The 29-year-old started alongside Ciaran Clarke and Federico Fernandez at centre-back and helped limit the defending champions to four shots on target over 90 minutes.
Schar blocked a number of shots, made multiple clearances, read the game well to intercept passes and wasn’t reckless making challenges. He was strong in the air and made an incredible clearance from the six-yard box to stop a goal, which led to supporters lauding him on social media.

Wilson, Darlow and Schar all outstanding for #nufc imho. Wilson such a willing outlet, gave Phillips in particular a tough night. He tired but a threat for 80 mins. Darlow's saves and Schar clearances important. No lack of commitment from Bruce's players. 0-0 fair result #NEWLIV

Fabian Schar has often looked half hearted, erratic & disinterested in 2020, but he was back to his best last night.
Aggressive, read the play brilliantly, calm on the ball & put his body on the line to protect our point.
Great to see! ???#NUFC

Saying that, our back 5, especially Schar/Fernandez/Clark were excellent. Surely Darlow has to be on England's radar ??♂️
Matt Longstaff too ?? he's got to stay in the team now.#NUFC

Fabian Schar is underrated ngl….at times felt what he's doing at Newcastle. If not an absolute top team, he deserves to be playing in a quality team. Apart from clearances, his passing especially long passes are brilliant too. #NUFC https://t.co/xsu5mafKvU

One of the first to jump on board NUFC being rubbish, tonight so many good individual performances against the best in Europe. Darrow, Fernandez, Schar, Hayden, Matty and our proper No.9 Wilson were brilliant we rode our luck at times but we also created a few chances #NUFC

Thought Schar was back to his best tonight. If only we could turn back time. #nufc #NUFC_1980_1994

– Darlow for England!
– Matty like a Duracell battery & ice cool on the ball
– Schar back to his best
– Yedlin surprisingly good. Playing for a move or a new deal?
– Fernandez & Clark rock solid
– Wilson the full package. Energy, pace, power, intelligence#NEWLIV pic.twitter.com/zto8zrifxn— NUFCblog.co.uk (@NUFCblogcouk) December 31, 2020
Against Liverpool, the Swiss international had 40 touches, won two aerial duels, completed 65% of his 20 passes, made three interceptions, gave away only one foul, made 12 clearances, blocked two shots and made one tackle.
Schar has made 10 appearances in all competitions this season, keeping only his second clean sheet of the campaign. He hasn’t been on the winning side in any game since November but put in a performance that will steer Newcastle to victories in the future.
The Magpies are 14th in the Premier League with 19 points from 15 games and will take a lot of positives from Wednesday’s stalemate. United next face Leicester City on January 3.
