Newcastle fans react over report of Liverpool assessment of Jamal Lewis

A number of Newcastle United fans have been reacting to the latest report from Chronicle Live in which Liverpool Echo’s Joe Rimmer outlined why the Reds were interested in Jamal Lewis in the summer.

Lewis was the subject of intense speculation throughout the summer transfer window following Norwich City’s relegation from the Premier League. Liverpool were heavily linked with a potential move for the 22-year-old and they offered a fee of around £10 million plus some substantial add-ons for the Northern Ireland international. However, they moved on when that offer was rejected.

That allowed Newcastle to step in and secure the signing of Lewis for a fee of around £15 million. Since then, the left-back has endured a difficult period at St James’ Park and had not been able to repeat the same level of form he showed for Norwich. The 22-year-old has averaged just 0.5 interceptions and 1.5 tackles per game (Sofascore) and has been left out the starting line-up on a few occasions.

The report from Chronicle Live reveals that Liverpool were impressed with the defender’s attitude and ‘believed he possessed an elite mindset and that he had the potential to develop working with the likes of Andrew Robertson.’ That suggests it was something of a coup for the Magpies to end up with someone regarded so highly by the Premier League champions. It has not worked out like that so far.

Many Newcastle fans were keen to point out that Liverpool’s view of him over the summer reflects how badly he is being coached at the moment and how much he is regressing. While there was one supporter who just believed that the Reds’ view of him was wrong and that the Magpies are seeing the type of quality that he really has.
