Newcastle fans debate whether Darlow or Dubravka should be first choice

A number of Newcastle United fans have been debating whether Martin Dubravka should be brought straight back into the side ahead of the in-form Karl Darlow when he returns from injury.

Dubravka has missed out on the start of the Premier League season, with the Slovakian’s run of two successive seasons without missing a match brought to an end. His heel injury is thought to be set to keep him out until roughly December after complications with his recovery, per The Times.

In Dubravka’s absence, Darlow has stepped up to the plate and taken his opportunity to impress for Steve Bruce’s side. The former Nottingham Forest ‘keeper has so far managed to average an impressive 4.9 saves per game (Sofascore) to help the Magpies get off to their best start to a season since their promotion in 2016/17.

Darlow has made the most saves of anyone in the Premier League so far this campaign, with 34 in his opening seven matches (premierleague.com). That form has seen him earn plenty of plaudits and he is reportedly being considered by England for a potential callup to the national team squad, per Chronicle Live.

Newcastle fans react to Dubravka and Darlow debate

A debate has taken place on Twitter as to whether Darlow should be dropped upon Dubravka’s return. Many Newcastle fans were keen to point out that the Englishman should have earned the right to keep his place in the side for now, while others believe that Bruce faces a pleasant selection headache.
