Former England international Darren Bent has urged Ki Sung-Yueng to leave Newcastle in January and has advised the midfielder to push for a return to Celtic.

The South Korean has been linked with a move back to his former club in recent weeks and speaking to Football Insider, Bent said that he thinks a move away from St James’ Park and back to Parkhead would be a good move.

He has been a good player, he knows the club and sometimes it’s about how things fit. He’s been there before, knows the club really, really well, so for him and his family, it’s probably easy for him to go back to Celtic as he is familiar with the club and its surroundings.

Ki’s time at Newcastle looks like it’s coming to an end, given the fact that he’s well down the pecking order under Steve Bruce.

A return to Celtic would certainly make sense from the player’s point of view but whether or not Neil Lennon would want him back in the squad is another matter.

The Hoops have been linked with moves for a few midfielders, including another of their ex-players, Victor Wanyama, as they look to win yet another league title.

If Newcastle could get a transfer fee for Ki, they’d almost certainly accept it, whilst a loan move could also make sense if another club would be happy to take on some of his wages.
