Shelvey had been struggling this season prior to the match against West Ham, which is why he was not in the team for a number of games before Longstaff’s suspension. He has clearly been working hard to get back to his best and it has resulted in a superb performance against the Hammers.
His free-kick was sensational and he controlled the midfield throughout the game, showing that he still has plenty to offer in a Newcastle shirt going forward. If he can continue to perform like this, Longstaff is going to have a job on his hands to get back into the side.
