Tottenham join race to land Mateta – are Newcastle a better option?

Tottenham have joined Newcastle in the race to land Mainz forward Jean-Philippe Mateta in January.

According to The Daily Mail, Spurs are interested in Mateta as they look to bolster their attacking options.

Newcastle have been linked with a move for Mateta and are said to have had a €28m bid rejected over the summer – with Mainz demanding £35m.

Are Newcastle a better option for him?

Possibly. It depends on where Newcastle are in the table in January. If Newcastle are still in the relegation zone and heading towards the Championship, a move to Spurs will be far more appealing to the forward.

However, if Steve Bruce manages to pull the club up to midtable, Mateta may feel as though he has more of a chance of regular first-team football. Harry Kane is Tottenham’s first-choice striker and that is unlikely to change any time soon, whilst Newcastle have struggled for goals this season and the arrival of Mateta could make him Bruce’s first-choice instantly.

Joelinton has scored just once in nine Premier League games and is struggling to make an impact in England. If Mateta is able to come in and impress, he would have a great platform to prove to bigger clubs that he has what it takes to be a starting number nine at the very top level.
