Newcastle made €28m bid for Mateta – should they go back in January?

Newcastle enjoyed a busy summer transfer window as they brought a number of new faces to St. James’ Park under Steve Bruce.

Jetro Willems, Emil Krafth, Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton all arrived – with the latter costing Newcastle a club-record £40m.

However, Sport Bild – via The Chronicle – have claimed that Newcastle attempted to sign another striker. They claim that the club made a €28m offer for Mainz forward Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The report claims that Newcastle ultimately failed in their bid, with Mateta staying in Germany with Mainz.

Should Newcastle reignite their interest in January?

Yes. Newcastle have only scored five goals in their eight Premier League matches and record signing Joelinton has managed just one personally. This means that the club could be forced into adding further firepower to their squad in the next transfer window.

Mateta scored 14 goals in the Bundesliga last season, proving that he has what it takes to score goals at the top level. His physical play would suit Newcastle, and the Premier League, and he could form a partnership up front with Joelinton.

It would just depend on whether Newcastle are willing to spend big again in January, with the report claiming that Mainz are looking for a fee in the region of £35m.
