Ritchie undergoes surgery on ankle injury – should he start when fit?

Newcastle midfielder Matt Ritchie has undergone surgery on his ankle following the injury he sustained against Leicester in August.

Ritchie was on the wrong end of a poor challenge from Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury and has now been forced into a minory surgery on his ankle.

The club have revealed that he could be back in action towards the end of the month.

Does Ritchie deserve a place in the side when fit?

Mark Runnacles/Getty Images Sport

Yes. He has proven his worth to Newcastle during his time at the club and there are some underperforming stars currently starting who could be dropped. Miguel Almiron, for example, has failed to register a goal or assist in 10 months for the club and Ritchie could take his place in midfield.

With Allan Saint-Maximin impressing on the right, Ritchie could start on the left with Joelinton leading the line through the middle. Saint-Maximin and Ritchie delivering crosses into the box could be exactly what Joelinton needs to thrive on Tyneside this season.

Ritchie’s crosses have been one of his biggest strengths during his time at Newcastle and playing him further up the pitch, instead of at left-back, should help to highlight them further.
