Ameobi excited at Carroll return – why it could be a great piece of business by the Magpies

Former Newcastle forward Shola Ameobi has hailed the club’s deal to bring back former teammate Andy Carroll to St James’ Park, labelling it as an ‘exciting’ move.

Carroll signed an initial 12-month deal with his boyhood club on deadline day and will provide back up to both Dwight Gayle and club-record signing Joelinton across the course of the campaign.

The towering striker scored 33 times in 90 games for the Magpies during his first stint on Tyneside before leaving for Liverpool in 2011.

And Ameobi, talking to The Chronicle, cited by The Boot Room, addressed the Magpies’ summer business, picking out Carroll’s return as a smart move.

You can look at the signings we’ve made as a club and be really excited about what this season holds.

Fans should be excited about Carroll. He’s a local boy coming home and we all know what he can do, the effect he had previously.

A fit Andy Carroll, there’s tremendous up sight there about what he can bring to the club.

Newcastle are in a win-win position. If Carroll can return to full fitness, they’ll be receiving the services of a powerful forward who will give everything to succeed in his second spell with the club. He’ll provide Steve Bruce with an impact option off the bench and could be key in the Magpies’ campaign.

However, if the former West Ham man can’t shake off his recent injury troubles, Newcastle won’t be suffering financially after the two parties agreed on a pay-as-you-play deal.

Everyone associated with the club will be hoping that Carroll can prove his fitness over the coming months, and doing so will see him provide an alternative firepower option for Bruce, something that is desperately needed at St James’ Park.
