Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist has labelled returning Newcastle forward Andy Carroll as ‘almost unplayable’ – but will his signing prove to be a smart one?
An emotional Carroll made the move back to St James’ Park on deadline day, penning an initial 12-month contract on Tyneside.
The 30-year-old has struggled with numerous injury problems in recent years and was let go by West Ham in the summer after a seven-year stint in London.

However, McCoist, talking to talkSPORT, cited by The Boot Room, believes that if he can stay fully fit, the forward could prove to be an exciting addition by Steve Bruce.
I just want him to stay fit. I like the fact he’s gone back home to the Toon, if they get him fit it’s a real boost to the Newcastle fans.
He’s probably one of the most exciting strikers when he is fully fit, almost unplayable. Physical, strong and scores some wonderful goals. What an exciting player for the Newcastle fans.

If the striker can avoid injury over the next nine months, he may well have a key role to play in Newcastle’s campaign. His Premier League experience will be vital in helping new signing Joelinton adjust to life in the division, and he could take the pressure off the Brazilian with his towering presence coming off the bench.
The former Liverpool and West Ham man knows what it takes to score goals at the highest level, so his services on a free transfer is certainly a gamble, however, it could be an emotional one that will pay off across the season if he can stay fit.
