Saint-Maximin passes Magpies medical – why Newcastle must be patient with him

Allan Saint-Maximin has reportedly passed his medical at Newcastle United ahead of a switch from OGC Nice. Magpies fans have good reason to be excited about his arrival, but patience may just be necessary.

According to Nice-Matin, as cited by GFFN via Twitter, the French winger encountered no complications as he underwent examinations on Tyneside.

Saint-Maximin is set to join in a deal worth around £16.4 million as Newcastle ramp up their dealings towards the end of the transfer window, and it seems confirmation of the move is imminent.

This acquisition is certainly an intriguing one. Saint-Maximin has the tools to be a quality player for the club, but Magpies supporters must be prepared for the type of player that the Frenchman is.

Renowned in Ligue 1 as one of the most talented yet frustrating attackers, a lack of consistency has plagued the winger in recent seasons. Despite undeniable ability, he has arguably not been as productive as he should have.

Saint-Maximin will take time to adjust at Newcastle. He has often been guilty of holding onto the ball for too long, and as a consequence of the disparity between the levels of pressing in France and in the Premier League, he will need a period of adaptation.

Whether Steve Bruce is the right man to extract the Nice winger’s potential remains to be seen. However, he has the ability to win matches almost single-handedly, and Magpies fans must embrace his enigmatic style of play while remaining patient in his debut campaign on English soil.
