Newcastle are reportedly on the verge of signing Hoffenheim striker Joelinton for a fee in the region of £36m – is he worth it?

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are in advanced talks over a deal for Joelinton after agreeing a fee with the German club.

The report claims that the deal could rise to £36m including add-ons, but is he worth it?

Joelinton caught the eye for Hoffenheim in the first-half of last season, scoring five of his seven league goals before December.

He ended the campaign on 11 goals in all competitions, but with only three in his last 20 appearances for Hoffenheim.

Newcastle are in desperate need of a striker after losing Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez – their two top scorers – from last season and Joelinton’s stats suggest that he will be unable to replicate their form.

The Brazilian is still young, at 22, but Newcastle need proven quality right now – rather than in a few years time. They could be in a big fight against relegation next season and this signing, albeit for a club-record, will not change that.

So, to answer the question. No, it does not appear – on face value – that Joelinton is worth the money Newcastle are reportedly paying for him.

Is he worth £36m?
