On this day 16 years ago Newcastle United recorded a memorable 3-1 home win against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League group stage.
Leverkusen had reached the final of the illustrious competition the year before, eventually beaten by Real Madrid and a Zinedine Zidane wonder goal.
However, Sir Bobby Robson’s side were more than up for the challenge and claimed all three points under the lights of St James’ Park.
The victory and results elsewhere meant United were heading to Inter Milan’s San Siro stadium ominously needing a win to stay in the competition.
