Benitez identifies two key areas to strengthen in January window

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has privately identified the two key areas needing strengthening in January, with Chronicle Live reporting that the Spaniard is targeting a winger and full-back cover.

DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett have been the Magpies’ starting full-back pair throughout the season, but following Dummett’s recent injury on international duty, Benitez was forced to field Matt Ritchie as a makeshift wing-back against Burnley at the weekend.

With only Javier Manquillo, who has made just three appearances this season, to call upon, Benitez is eyeing potential targets who can both challenge and support his first-choice full-back duo.

The former Real Madrid coach is also keen on landing another winger, with Newcastle lacking significant pace and a goal threat for wide positions.

Another striker has also been discussed, with the Tyneside club struggling to score consistently this season, but questions have been asked by supporters about how much money Benitez can expect to have in his budget come the winter window.

Newcastle are also looking for promising young players for Ben Dawson’s Under-23s side, and are hopeful of making at least one new addition for the second string before the end of the window.

Mike Ashley is prepared to make some funds available but has made it clear behind the scenes the club can’t compete with the top six.
