Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has been handed a huge £60,000 fine following positive comments he made about referee Andre Marriner last month.
Prior to the Magpies’ Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on September 22, Benitez was complimentary of Marriner, singling him out for praise.
Following comments by Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha, who claimed he would need to have his leg broken before a Premier League referee would give a red card to an offender, Benitez backed Marriner’s ability to act responsibly.
At the time, Benitez was quoted as saying:
I have a lot of confidence with Andre Marriner.
He has a lot of experience, even if his record with our players is not that great in terms of red cards.
As a result, the FA have awarded him with a huge fine, of which charge Benitez has accepted.
The Spaniard will now be preparing for his side to take on Manchester United on Saturday.
