Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez says it is ‘a pity’ that Jesús Gámez’s time at the club didn’t work out the way he had hoped.
The former Atlético Madrid full-back only made ten appearances in his two-year stint on Tyneside, and Benitez had previously been criticised for not better accommodating the Spaniard.
The 33-year old is now a free agent, and having struggled to find a new club since leaving St James’ Park, the former Spain youth international hit out at Benitez this week.

However, Benitez was quick to play down the situation, as quoted by the Newcastle Chronicle, saying:
What I have to say about Jesús Gámez is that it’s a pity because he was a good player.
When we signed him we knew we were bringing in a player with experience. But it’s a pity because he was always injured.
Hopefully, he will be fine and he will find a new club. For us it was a bad time because he was always injured.
This was in response to Gámez’ original complaint, that Benitez didn’t ‘contribute anything’ during his time with the club. Gámez had said:
He [Benitez] is a person that I do not like talking about because he didn’t contribute anything to me in these two years and I have nothing to say about him.
Yes, it got complicated at the beginning with an injury, then I broke my collarbone. I struggled to get back.
At the family level, the experience was very good.
At sporting level, the fans and the teammates were sensational, but the coach did not understand the situations that happened and also the deal was not the ideal one.
