Newcastle United want to sign Federico Fernandez from Swansea City this summer, according to a report from the Times.
The Magpies signed Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna earlier on this week but are still on the lookout for defensive reinforcements before the window slams shut.
Rafa Benitez’s central defensive options appeared to be strong heading into the season but following the news of Florian Lejeune’s cruciate ligament injury, it seems Fernandez has been identified as a target.

The Argentine central defender impressed in a difficult season for Swansea as they were consigned to relegation down to the Championship.
Graham Potter’s side have already sold Kyle Bartley to West Brom and may be keen to keep hold of their current pool of centre-backs, indicating that Fernandez will not be released easily.
Nevertheless, the allure of Premier League football could come as a tempting prospect for Fernandez, with the Magpies keen to continue their summer business before the window slams shut in under two weeks.
