The striker will join on a long-term contract from Bundesliga outfit Mainz, with Newcastle reportedly coughing up a fee worth £9.5 million to land the player this summer.
Muto was a part of the 23-man Japan squad that travelled to this summer’s World Cup in Russia. The 26-year-old featured only once, though, with his sole appearance coming in the 1-0 defeat to Poland.

Muto played an instrumental role in helping Mainz beat the drop from the Bundesliga last term. He found the net on eight occasions, guiding them to safety in the German top-flight.
The forward will join Newcastle as the club’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window so far, subject to a work permit being granted, with Rafa Benitez continuing to make the most of the limited funds allocated to him.
