Newcastle have agreed a fee with Bundesliga side Mainz in the region of £9.5 million for a deal to sign Yoshinori Muto.
Lee Ryder of The Chronicle reports that the Magpies are looking to close out a deal for the striker soon.
Muto has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League for some time, with both Newcastle and West Ham expressing an interest in the forward.
The Japanese international has been catching the eye in the Bundesliga but also impressed when given the chance in Russia at the World Cup.
Reports in Germany suggested that Newcastle could be forced to pay closer to £17 million for the player.
Benitez has been in the market for the striker since it became clear that Aleksandar Mitrovic no longer fits into his plans at the club.
The Serbian striker is expected to join Fulham once he returns from his holiday.
