Newcastle not safe yet, claims Ritchie

Newcastle midfielder Matt Ritchie feels that his side are not safe until they cross the 40-point mark this season, speaking to the Chronicle Live.

The Magpies secured another key win at the weekend as they beat Leicester City 2-1 at the King Power Stadium, a result which saw them move into the top half.

That result made it three consecutive wins in the league after home victories over strugglers Huddersfield Town and Southampton in recent weeks.

Rafa Benitez’s side now sit on 38 points and are ten points clear of the drop with just six games remaining in the season and barring something spectacular they have secured their place in the league next season.

After being promoted from the Championship last season the club found a struggle at the start but have really grown in confidence over the past month and have lost three of their last 13 matches.

Ritchie does not feel his side are safe just yet:

We need to get to 40 points – we’re not safe yet.

We need to perform well, and with good performances – as you’ve seen – come results.

We’re on a fantastic run at the moment and I think it’s gone under the radar a little bit – I think we’ve only been beaten by (Manchester) City twice and Liverpool in our last 13 or 14 games. I think we’ve been really solid and scored at good times, and today we did the same thing.
