Luka Milivojevic scored a penalty to deny the Magpies a vital win at Selhurst Park, as Crystal Palace drew 1-1 with Newcastle.
Newcastle took the lead through Mo Diame following Kenedy’s corner, but Milivojevic converted his spot-kick to equalise early into the second half.
Palace were the first to test their opposition. Patrick Van Aanholt played through Christian Benteke one-on-one but his shot was blocked well by Karl Darlow.
But Newcastle grabbed the opening goal 22 minutes in, as Kenedy played a low-drive from a corner which found Diame at the back post, making it hard for the midfielder to miss from close range.
Newcastle nearly added a second; Ayoze Perez sent Kenedy through on goal, but his effort was saved by Wayne Hennessey and Perez fired the follow-up also at the Palace goalkeeper.
Palace sought to grab an equaliser before the break, but after pinball in the penalty area, Karl Darlow palmed the ball onto the thigh of Benteke and then wide.
Palace dominated the early exchanges of the second half, and they won a penalty after Ciaran Clark was penalised for shirt pulling.
Milivojevic sent the penalty into the bottom right corner, but it was nearly saved by Darlow, who got two hands on the ball but failed to keep it out.
Palace thought they had won the game in the dying embers, Benteke headed Wilfried Zaha’s cross off the post and the rebound was blocked off the line twice by Ciaran Clark.
The result leaves Newcastle in 16th place, with today’s result lifting them one point above the relegation zone.
