Newcastle could miss out on Leicester striker

Newcastle United’s frustrations of missing out on Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala have been added to after an attempt to sign Leicester City striker Islam Slimani seems like it may fall through.

Rafa Benitez is seemingly desperate to bring in new signings to help Newcastle’s bid of staying up this season and he held a crisis transfer call with Mike Ashley yesterday to discuss who the club could sign before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

Benitez has told the fans he has a “responsibility” to keep Newcastle in the Premier League this term, but with their current squad, this goal looks increasingly difficult, and with other relegation feared teams strengthening today, Benitez is frustratingly wanting to add to his team.

As well as a failed attempt to sign Mangala, The Magpies have also missed out on Daniel Sturridge, who decided to join West Brom instead. Newcastle also had the opportunity to sign Feyenoord forward Nicolai Jorgensen but refused to pay the £20m price tag set for him.

Benitez has succeeded in signing Chelsea winger Kenedy, who is in line to make his debut tonight, but it is rumoured that Benitez could resign from Newcastle if a sufficient amount of players are not signed before the deadline and with a first team-quality striker and goalkeeper still wanted, the Toon may have to spend more than intended.

matchday.
