Michy Batshuayi bagged a brace to help send Chelsea to the fifth round of the FA Cup after beating Newcastle 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Batshuayi scored two first half goals to give Chelsea a comfortable lead at the break, and Marcos Alonso added to Chelsea’s tally with a superb free-kick.
Newcastle were promising early on, with their biggest highlight coming when Jonjo Shelvey’s effort forced Willy Caballero into a smart save at his near post.
But Chelsea took the lead 30 minutes in. Pedro played an inch-perfect pass from his own half, which eventually worked its way to Batshuayi to tap home.
Batshuayi grabbed his second just before the interval. The Belgian saw his deflected strike loop over Karl Darlow, after Jamaal Lascelles’ failed block.
Newcastle looked to hit back straight away, but Caballero did excellently to divert opportunities from Jonjo Shelvey and Chancel Mbemba away to safety.
But the chances completely dried for Newcastle in the second half, with Chelsea looking the more likely to add to their goals total.
Marcos Alonso drove a fierce volley at Darlow from close-range, but the Newcastle keeper did well to block the ball with two strong hands.
Chelsea grabbed their third goal through Alonso, when he arrowed a powerful free-kick around the Newcastle wall and into the top-right corner.
The result means Newcastle crash out of the FA Cup, having not progressed past the fourth round since the 2005-06 season.
Below are the Newcastle player ratings from their defeat to Chelsea.
