Rafa Benitez is interested in Sparta Prague goalkeeper

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has made contact with Sparta Prague over a potential deal for goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, according to Tutto Mercato Web.

The Slovakian shot-stopper has been heavily linked with a switch to Tyneside and Benitez is determined to close out the deal, with an important few months lying ahead.

Newcastle sit in 15th place in the Premier League, just three points away from the relegation zone, and Benitez will be looking to strengthen to ensure the Magpies retain their top-flight status.

Tutto Mercato Web’s report suggests that Benitez has informed Sparta manager Andrea Stramaccioni of his desire to sign the 29-year old ‘keeper, who has kept six clean sheets in 11 league appearances this season.

With both Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot having failed to make the number one spot their own this season, Benitez is hoping that the Slovakia international will prove to be a good option.

Newcastle have struggled with conceding goals this season, having let in 31 goals in the Premier League so far.
