Mikel Merino relishes fans adoration

Newcastle midfielder Mikel Merino has admitted that he is amazed by how much love the club’s fans have shown him since he joined in the summer.

The Spanish midfielder said that what he was told about the atmosphere at St James’ Park was a huge factor in his decision to switch Borussia Dortmund in Germany for Tyneside.

Merino quickly established himself in the North East and has quickly become a fan favourite, something which he loves. Talking to BBC’s Football Focus, Merino said;

The main thing that convinced me on the move was the great atmosphere that I heard this club had.

And then they have a coach like Rafa and play in the Premier League – one of the best leagues in the world. To play against all these huge teams, for me, was a huge step and I believe I will thrive with this decision.

The English are such kind people. Maybe my thoughts were not that when I first came here. But I arrived in Newcastle and since then I have felt the kindness of all of the Newcastle supporters, as have my family too.

I am really happy because the fans are treating me with all of their love and I appreciate it so much.

Although the club got off to a fairly decent start to the season, Newcastle have seen their form turn sour in the last month, having slipped to 16th in the Premier League with no win in eight.

Despite this, the 21-year old insists that the Magpies are in high spirits, and they are confident that results will pick up. He continued;

The spirit of the team is great. The squad is made up of a lot of young players and we know that we have a lot to prove, and also improve.

We know that we are capable of improving and that is the important thing for us – improving in each game and each training session.
