Fulham playmaker Tom Cairney says he is happy at the Cottagers and insists it was nice to know Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez was interested in bringing him to St James Park, the Chronicle Live report.
Cairney, 26, has been one of the top performers in the Championship over the past 18 months and has been a long-term target for Benitez as he tries to lure Cairney into making the move north.
Cairney was involved in 23 goals last season, scoring 12 and providing 11 for his teammates, and with the January window fast approaching, rumours are starting to gather pace over a potential move to Newcastle for the Scottish international.

However, Cairney was quick to play those rumours down and described it as a massive accolade that Benitez thinks so highly of him.
It’s a massive accolade that Rafa Benitez wants me. It’s a pat on the back to myself I guess, to know that other managers appreciate what I’m doing. I feel a responsibility to Fulham. It’s been great ever since I arrived. I enjoy playing football, I really enjoy playing it at the Cottage and long may it continue.
With Fulham not hitting the heights of last season so far, a high offer from Newcastle in January may tempt the Championship side into selling one of their key players.
