Newcastle’s deal to land Matt Targett on loan from Southampton has broken down, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

It is understood that Targett was keen on the move, but talks between the clubs broke down over disagreements on the deal’s length.

The 21-year-old came through Southampton’s academy, and made his Southampton debut in 2014. Since then, he has made 40 appearances for the South Coast club.

Newcastle have had a fairly frustrating transfer window, with Rafa Benitez missing out on several top targets, and it looks as though they will not sign Targett now.
Newcastle are still in the market for a defender, and with Benitez looking to tighten up his back line, he may turn his attention to different left-backs.
