De Jong wants to stay at Newcastle and fight for his place

Newcastle United midfielder Siem De Jong wants to stay at the Premier League club this season to fight for a place in the team after spending lengthy spells on the sideline due to injury, according to the Shields Gazette.

The Dutch international player joined the Magpies back in 2014 but has failed to impress during his time at the club.

The midfielder has been plagued with injuries which have halted his progress in the first team and has meant that he has never really got a run of games in the side.

De Jong, who plays in an attacking midfield role and can operate just behind the striker, was loaned out last season back to his homeland to PSV and many have expected the player to make a permanent move away from St James’ Park this summer.

But the player is determined to prove to the fans and manager Rafa Benitez that he has what it takes to help Newcastle in the Premier League.

I will talk to the manager because I want to prove myself at Newcastle.

I still feel I haven’t started here. It bothers me that I haven’t been able to do that. I wish it was different, but I can’t change that now.

I’m disappointed about my years here until now. I want it to be a different story.

Newcastle may end up keeping De Jong after having a frustrating transfer window where they have failed to capture many of their priority targets in attack.
