After seeing Brighton defeat Birmingham on Tuesday night, Newcastle knew that they needed to beat Burton Albion to move back to the top of the Championship table and they managed to do so, winning 1-0.
Referee Keith Stroud’s shocking call to award Burton with an indirect free-kick rather than ordering a penalty retake thankfully didn’t prove costly at Matt Ritchie’s superb strike was enough to earn the Magpies a valuable three points.
In truth, this is a game that will only live long in the memory due to the referee’s howler but the win is all that matters as Rafa Benitez’s side look to secure Premier League football next season.
