According to The Guardian, midfielder Cheik Tioté’s proposed move to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua has collapsed because of unsuccessful talks over personal terms.
This comes as a surprise due to the fact that the Ivory International passed his medical in recent days, both clubs had agreed on a fee of £8 million for Tioté. But the demand for an increase on his £60,000-a-week contract has been rejected by the Chinese club.
Shanghai Shenhua are still hopeful of the signing of Tioté, whilst it is rumoured that the midfielder is returning to Newcastle, there is still the possibility of a move to the Middle East in the upcoming weeks.
McClaren is obviously confident of selling Tioté since the purchase of Jonjo Shelvey for £12 million, who looks to be a replacement for the seemingly declining midfielder.

Newcastle will also be making a significant profit in the sale of Tioté, with the fee being rumoured at £8-million. He joined the club in 2010 and was signed for just £3.5 million from FC Twente.
This cash in will help provide funds for the clubs more expensive January transfer targets, including Tottenham’s Andros Townsend and West Brom’s Saido Berahino. The fee for Townsend’s services are supposedly in the region of £14-million.
