Cabella to join Marseille permanently

Remy Cabella looks likely to hit the 12 game mark at Marseille which will formalise his departure from Newcastle.

Cabella’s career on Tyneside never got off the ground and a clause in his loan deal will see his switch to Stade Velodrome made permanent for a fee believed to be around £6 million.

Cabella has continued his struggle to find form at Marseille, picking up just one assist as the French side has floundered in Ligue 1 this season. He has, however, made 7 appearances and should make his final five in time for the cash to come in before the January window.

The hope for Newcastle fans must now be that that money will be swiftly re-invested in the squad that is looking desperately poor.

Despite the claims at the time that the Cabella deal would essentially be used to counterweight the big money signing of Florian Thauvin, it is now clear that Newcastle are going to have to spend big in January to secure their Premier League status for another year.

This injection of cash must be used to strengthen a defence that has look woefully uncompetitive in the Premier League. The priority must be a centre back given Steven Taylor’s injury and Coloccini’s lack of form and leadership. It is believed that the Geordie Brains Trust (Charnley, Carr et co) have already begun lining up their targets for January.

matchday.
