Difficult transition for Wijnaldum

chroniclelive.co.uk are reporting that Georginio Wijnaldum has admitted it has been ‘really hard’ to go from titles with PSV to being in the relegation zone with Newcastle in the Premier League.

The Dutch playmaker was captain of PSV last season as he won the league title and the midfielder played a huge part in the campaign, scoring regularly throughout.

The 24-year-old skippered PSV Eindhoven to the Dutch title last season and enjoyed a free-scoring campaign from midfield.

Newcastle signed him for £14.5m in the summer and he hasn’t had as much of an impact to Newcastle’s results as he would have liked, with still just three league wins for Newcastle in 2015 and none so far this season. They lost at home to Sheffield Wednesday in midweek in the Capital One Cup to further enhance their poor start to the season.

Due to this, Wijnaldum has said that it has been a hard “situation to deal with” in terms of his own personal performances.

When he was asked how hard it has been to go from winning titles to battling relegation, Wijnaldum said:

Yes, really hard – it is a situation I have to deal with. I can work hard and stay positive and look forward.

That is what I am doing, now I must work harder to get better results, that is what we must do as a team.

Wijnaldum also stated that Newcastle need to become more clinical in front of goal because they “don’t create a lot of chances” in the Premier League.

“The games against West Ham and Watford we didn’t start well,” he added.

“Against West Ham we didn’t begin the first half well because in the first few minutes we let in a goal, that was really bad.

“And against Watford we didn’t do well in the first half. I think we played a normal second half.

“And also the chances we get we don’t make count so it’s difficult to win games if you don’t score your chances.

Even though they have had such a poor year and start to the season, Wijnaldum is convinced that Newcastle can find a good run of form and climb up the Premier League table.

He said:

“I’m sure about that because I train every day with the team and of course we are a team that must learn more because we are a new team.

“I think that’s not an excuse because in the first weeks you must work hard to get results and that’s what we’re not doing right now so we must work hard to get results.”
