According to Miles Starforth of the Shields Gazette, Dutch international Jetro Willems made a visit to St. James’ Park yesterday to watch his former PSV compatriot Georginio Wijnaldum make his Premier League debut.
The 21-year-old Dutchman posted a photo of himself onboard a flight to Tyneside and, cryptically said: “Fly to the future.”
With many Newcastle fans not convinced of our two current left-backs, Massadio Haidara and Paul Dummett – Willems would definitely be a welcome addition. He has appeared 15 teams for the Dutch national side and featured at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
It’s worth noting that Willems is carrying an injury at the moment, and could simply have been just supporting his close friend Wijnaldum, who scored a stunning header on his debut – but, Ross Gregory, also of the Shields Gazette, has stated on his twitter that Willems is “keen on a move” to Newcastle.
Willems would be a brilliant addition to the squad, but this deal does remain unlikely, as the club already have two registered left-backs in the squad – and Steve McClaren has given no indication that he’s looking to strengthen that area of the team. It is thought that PSV would require a fee of £15-£20 million for one of their most prized assets.
