Newcastle awaiting Chelsea’s response

Chelsea are still considering Newcastle United’s offer for Marco van Ginkel, but the Magpies face competition from bitter rivals Sunderland for the Dutchman’s signature, according to Simon Jonas of the Daily Mail.

Van Ginkel moved to Chelsea from Vitesse Arnhem in 2013 after he impressed in the Dutch league. However, his Chelsea career is yet to take off as he has played only four times for the Blues.

His first season was marred by a serious injury and the following season was spent out on loan at Italian club AC Milan.

He played a number of matches for the Italian side but also suffered from injuries which halted his progress.

Now back at Stamford Bridge, competition for a spot in the starting eleven is heavy so it looks likely that the 22-year-old will leave, but it remains to be seen whether it is a permanent or temporary move.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren should be familiar with the player as he spent time coaching FC Twente in Holland.

The manager may offer the midfielder an opportunity to perform regularly.
