Newcastle made an approach for French attacker Florian Thauvin last week and, according to Le 10 Sport, their offer is still under consideration by Marseille president Vincent Labrune.
It is believed Newcastle tabled a bit in the region of €15million (roughly £10.7million when converted to sterling).
Marseille were in a difficult financial position which Lee Charnley & Co. were hoping to take full advantage of, but following the exits of several key players – such as Dimitri Payet and Giannelli Imbula – the Ligue 1 outfit are no longer desperate to sell their prized assets.
The news of Newcastle’s bid being under consideration came shortly before the unveiling of Karim Rekik and Lucas Ocampos – the latter posing as a viable replacement for Thauvin.
The fact that the offer remains on the table, and Marseille have signed two potential replacements in the shape of Lucas Ocampos and Bouna Sarr, could hand Newcastle a much needed boost in their pursuit of the former Ligue 1 Young POTY (an award previously won by the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Robert Pires, Thiery Henry and David Trezeguet among many other notable names).
