Cheick Tiote’s future will be resolved this week, according to a report by Lee Ryder of the Chronicle.
Tiote’s future at St. James Park has been under speculation since the end of the season. Newly appointed Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren – who worked with Tiote during is spell managing FC Twente – is thought to be preparing to speak to the midfielder this week in an attempt to find a solution.
According to Lee Ryder, Russian outfit Locomotiv Moscow were keen on the player last summer, but they could only put together a bid of £4million – well below Newcastle’s valuation. Galatasaray were also reportedly interested earlier in the season. Fellow Turkish side Trabzonspor are now believed to be the front runners for his services.
It is believed the Ivorian’s representatives are demanding a new contract for their client, who only has two years remaining on his current contract. With the club unwilling to meet his demands, they could elect to cash-in on the midfielder who has made 118 appearances for the club.
Last season, Tiote managed just ten Premier League appearances in what was a season to forget for Newcastle United.
The 29-year-old struggled with injuries and his fitness last campaign, as well as representing the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations.
