Newcastle are set to appoint Steve McClaren as their new head coach within the next 48 hours and he wants to recruit his own backroom staff.
According to various news outlets, John Carver and Steve Stone have both lost their jobs at St James’ Park, following months of speculation surrounding their futures. This news comes just a week after Ryan Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez revealed they were released by Carver over the phone.
Carver was appointed as interim boss at the turn of the year, when Alan Pardew departed for Crystal Palace, and Stone stepped up as his number 2. In the resulting 19 games, Newcastle struggled, picking up just 13 points, and were dragged into a relegation battle.
The Magpies secured Premier League safety on the final day of the season and Mike Ashley confirmed the club would invest this summer, in order to prevent a repeat of their collapse.
Newcastle will look to appoint McClaren’s number two this week, with Steve Round and Lee Clark among the contenders.
Eric Steele is also expected to join McClaren on Tyneside, as Andy Woodman edges closer to a reunion with Alan Pardew at Selhurst Park. Another member of staff expected to follow suit is Steve Black, a Newcastle-born sports psychologist.
