Newcastle United have offered a trial to 6ft 3in striker Callum Douglas, according to the Chronicle.
The 16-year-old began his youth career on the books of Wallsend Boys Club as a defender, before having to move to Spain due to his father’s business.
Since moving to Spain, Douglas has perfected his technique and has been converted into a striker, ‘tearing up goalscoring records’ in Alicante’s district leagues. In fact, just this season, Douglas has scored over 45 times for Elche’s youth ranks, which in turn caught the attention of several clubs, including Elche, Valencia and bitter rivals Sunderland.
Douglas is now expected to make his way to Tyneside for a trial this summer and will be desperate to show his boyhood club what he can do, in order to earn a contract at St James’ Park.
When it comes to youth recruitment, Graham Carr has stepped up his efforts to find local talents and is leaving no stone left unturned – even if it moves to Spain at an early age.
Meanwhile, Newcastle are looking to continue their push for homegrown talent by placing Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin and Hull City defender James Chester high among their priorities this summer. The pair are available for a cut-price this summer following both their employers’ relegation to the Championship.
