Newcastle cool Vieira interest

Newcastle United have cooled their interest in Patrick Vieira becoming their new head coach and will now turn their attentions to Steve McClaren.

Vieira was the bookies favourite to succeed John Carver, following heavy speculation over the weekend. However, according to the BBC, managing director Lee Charnley will not be following up his initial interest in the Frenchman due to differences over the club’s recruitment and transfer policy.

Steve McClaren is now the clear favourite to become Newcastle’s new head coach, but Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr will assess the pros and cons of the former England boss, as well as the remaining candidates on their managerial short-list – believed to be Remi Garde and one other.

McClaren has been heavily linked with the head coach vacancy ever since Alan Pardew’s departure at the turn of the year, but, due to commitments with the Rams, he rejected two offers from Newcastle. However, his stance may now have changed as he was sacked by Derby County last month, after the club failed to gain promotion from the Championship. He is now available and reportedly interested in the Newcastle hot seat.

Although, it is currently unclear whether Newcastle are willing to make another approach for him, as he has spurned their advances twice already.
