Jonas Gutierrez has urged Newcastle owner Mike Ashley to learn from his past mistakes in order to help the club move forward.
The Argentine winger played a major part in securing Newcastle’s Premier League safety, with a goal and an asisst in the 2-0 victory against West Ham on the final day.
Ahead of the game, the controversial owner publicly announced he will be looking to invest this summer and that he will not be selling the club until ‘they win something’ (before conceding Champions League qualification also constitutes as winning something in his eyes).
The Geordie faithful now eagerly await to see whether Ashley will stay true to his word and spend this summer, but, first, Newcastle must appoint a new head coach to help rebuild the first-team squad. With rumours of Steve McClaren and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink being approached surfacing earlier this week, the Toon Army are beginning to become restless with the silence surrounding the appointment.
Jonas – who’s set to depart the club this summer when his contract expires – was asked what needs to happen this summer for Newcastle to progress, the 31-year-old responded: “That’s a good question for the owner.
“I think the club has to learn what has happened in the last few years when they have been in charge of the club. It’s important to think about good and bad decisions. It’s good for learning, and to improve.
“They have to take note about what has happened during the last few years. They have to think what they are going to do, if they are going to go forward. They have to think about what is best for the city.”
