Newcastle should try to sign Coutinho

Newcastle United are 14th in the Premier League for goals (37), 11th in the table for shots (12.2 per game) and 11th in the league for possession (38.8% on average per game), so they desperately need a ball-player who can create clear-cut opportunities.

Sport say the Magpies are interested in Phillippe Coutinho and the 29-year-old would tick every box on their list. Coutinho has spent the second half of this season on loan at Aston Villa, scoring four goals with three assists in 11 league games, so he’s proven he belongs back in the English top-flight.

The Brazilian international has the option to sign permanently for Villa this summer if his £33.6m asking price is matched, however, so Newcastle would need to offer Coutinho a more attractive proposition.

Given the Magpies are four places better off in the table than the Midlands outfit and want to push for a European place next season, might Coutinho hold off on committing his future?

He’s created 18 chances, had 18 successful dribbles, whipped in 14 crosses and completed 82.6% of his passes, so the Barcelona man would greatly improve Newcastle’s squad. The Magpies should go all out to sign him.
