# Newcastle United target former forward as Jaissle looks to solve striker problems

**Newcastle United are having a difficult season under Matthias Jaissle. They currently sit 13th in the Premier League with just 11 points off 9 games.**

Jaissle has come under particular criticism for his misfiring forward line who have failed to hit the back of the net consistently. That contrast was visible in their last defeat against Everton when they managed their first shot in the 85th minute.

The opposite was visible in their earlier game against Everton in the Carabao Cup, where they had 28 shots, yet scored only one. This inconsistency has prompted[Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/newcastle-united/) and [Matthias Jaissle](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/matthias-jaissle/) to look for a reliable option upfront.

That striker hunt has reportedly taken them back to one of their old forwards, who failed to impress during his first spell as a teenager. Newcastle United have set their sights on a deal to sign Ivan Toney from Al Ahli ahead of the January transfer window.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a return to the Premier League since leaving Brentford for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in 2024. However, a reunion with Matthias Jaissle could now offer him an opportunity to return to the [Premier League](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/premier-league/).

## **Newcastle keen on reunion with Ivan Toney**

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle are determined to sign a new striker in January, with Toney firmly on their radar

Ivan Toney is a long-term target for Newcastle and could be convinced to make the switch following Jaissle’s arrival. The pair previously worked together at Al-Ahli, where the England international scored 72 goals in 93 appearances under the German manager.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown explained why Toney would make sense for the Magpies.

“Newcastle’s major problems this season have been down to the lack of goals from their strikers,” [Brown told Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/newcastle-united/newcastle-set-sights-on-ivan-toney-ahead-of-january-transfer-expert).

“They don’t have somebody in the side who you would look at and say, he’s somebody we want to rely on to provide us with the goals, particularly given where Newcastle want to be.”

Brown believes Toney could be one of the leading options available to Newcastle in January.

“It’s a deal that would make a lot of sense because he’s got a great record in front of goal, he knows the Premier League, and he’s already got a relationship with the manager.

“When you’re asking which strikers could be available for Newcastle, he’s got to be near the top of their list, and it’s definitely a move I can see them making.”

## **Toney transfer could prove difficult for Newcastle**

Toney came through Newcastle’s youth ranks before leaving the club in 2018. He has since established himself as a reliable goalscorer, first at Brentford and then in Saudi Arabia.

However, there are financial complications. The striker remains under contract with Al-Ahli until 2028 and is reportedly earning almost three times more than Newcastle’s highest-paid player.

[As covered in our previous report at Read Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/10/29/ivan-toney-newcastle-united-transfer-jaissle/), a return to England could require Toney to accept a significant pay cut with Newcastle required to negotiate a transfer fee with Al-Ahli as well.

Despite the challenges, Toney’s previous relationship with Jaissle and his goalscoring record make him an interesting option for Newcastle as they look to address their problems up front.
