# Newcastle lacked bravery after another Everton defeat at St James’ Park

**Newcastle United suffered another disappointing defeat as Thierno Barry scored for the second time in five days to give [Everton a 1-0 win](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/11/03/newcastle-united-everton-thierno-barry-premier-league-defeat/) at St James’ Park in the Premier League.**

The Magpies struggled to create anything  throughout the game and did not manage a shot on target until the 85th minute. It was a different night from their Carabao Cup defeat where they registered 28 shots against the same opposition.

The defeat leaves Newcastle United 13th in the Premier League table and extends their difficult run to four defeats in their last five matches across all competitions.

The Magpies have also struggled at home, winning just one of their five [Premier League](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/premier-league/) matches at St James’ Park this season. They are also yet to keep a clean sheet on home soil in the league.

## **Jaissle admits Newcastle lacked confidence**

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle was frustrated with his team’s performance and admitted they failed to follow the approach that had worked so well in the cup meeting.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t deliver our style of play across the whole 90 minutes,” [Jaissle told Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/13607320/newcastle-are-flat-and-boring-jamie-carragher-warns-magpies-face-tough-premier-league-season-after-everton-defeat).

“That’s something we are frustrated about. We had a different approach. It looked so good during the week, I have to say the lads were committed to what we were doing and today we can just look back and wonder why we couldn’t bring it on the pitch. If you can’t deliver when it counts, you don’t deserve to win.”

The German boss also pointed towards Newcastle’s lack of bravery in possession and their over-reliance on long balls.

“We were not brave enough in possession. Too many long balls. We did not use our double six in possession where I think we were quite good against Everton a couple days ago. Then it was more of a wide game, back and forth, collecting second balls. That’s something that we wanted to avoid to be more dominant.”

## **Newcastle must overcome confidence problems**

Jaissle also admitted that confidence is becoming an issue within the squad, with both younger and more experienced players struggling to perform.

“It feels at the moment that there’s not too much confidence. Not only with the young lads, but also with the more experienced ones. We have to overcome that as a unit. It is expected when you are in transition. Only together we can come out of it.”

The Newcastle boss also accepted responsibility for the supporters’ frustration after hearing boos at the final whistle.

“After a performance like that, I can understand that \[fans booing\]. That’s a reality and I am responsible for that. We need to work again and again on the things we need to improve. After today, that’s a lot.”

Jaissle now faces a difficult task ahead with Saturday’s trip to Fulham. Newcastle desperately needing a response after another disappointing night at St James’ Park. Another bad result and it could mean more pressure on Matthias Jaissle who is having a difficult time at St James’s Park.
