# Three things Newcastle United must improve against Everton after Carabao Cup defeat

**Newcastle United have a chance to respond to their Carabao Cup disappointment when they welcome Everton to St James’ Park on Monday, but Matthias Jaissle’s side must address three major issues if they are to get a better result.**

The Magpies suffered a [3-1 defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/10/30/everton-3-1-newcastle-united-match-report/) despite controlling large parts of the game and creating plenty of opportunities. However, individual defensive mistakes and a lack of quality in front of goal proved to be the difference.

With the two sides meeting again on Monday night, [Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/newcastle-united/) will need to make some improvements.

## **1. Cut out the defensive mistakes**

Newcastle United essentially handed [Everton](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/everton/) their goals in Thursday’s cup tie through individual errors and sloppy defending rather than allowing David Moyes’ side to dictate the game or build dangerous attacking moves.

You cannot keep making these mistakes against a David Moyes team. Newcastle controlled the game but cheap giveaways and failing to clear their lines gave Everton easy opportunities to score.

At St James’ Park, the Magpies need to be more disciplined defensively and make Everton work harder for their chances. Another performance with similar mistakes could prove costly.

## **2. Start fast and don’t let Everton settle**

Everton came out with far more energy in the cup tie and caught Newcastle off guard, scoring twice before half-time.

The Magpies need to use their home advantage and put pressure on Everton from the opening whistle. David Moyes is likely to take a cautious approach away from home and allowing his side to settle could play into their hands.

[Chris Sutton from BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cq1m4j79x50jo) also believes Newcastle could leave themselves exposed.

“Everton’s age-old problem is how Thierno Barry is going to perform because they rely so heavily on how well he is playing up front. To be fair to David Moyes’s side, they carried more of a threat than I expected in their defeat by Arsenal and I can see them getting chances here, because Newcastle are so open.”

Sutton added: “The Magpies will absolutely go for it again here and I have a sneaky feeling they will leave the door ajar for Everton to pinch the points.”

## **3. Be more clinical in front of goal**

Newcastle had 28 shots against Everton but managed just one goal through [Dan Burn](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/10/30/dan-burn-newcastle-everton-cup-defeat/). Despite enjoying better possession and controlling large parts of the midfield, their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal proved another major problem.

[Read Newcastle](https://readnewcastle.com/) asked [Everton football expert Gary Gowers](https://www.readeverton.com/) how he expects Moyes to address Newcastle’s attacking threat after Thursday’s performance, where Moyes’ side faced 28 shots.

“It is a tricky one for Moyes given how he always sets his side up to be solid and defensively sound. As ecstatic as he’d have been at the Toffees’ Carabao Cup win, he’ll have quietly had kittens when presented with that stat by his analysts. Deep down, he’ll know that if they concede 28 shots at St James’, they’ll almost certainly lose the game.

“Given how small his squad is (after Everton’s recruitment team screwed up the last few days of the transfer window) his options are fairly limited, but he’ll definitely be hoping that Jarrad Branthwaite will be fit as he’s his best defender.

“Also, in midfield, for all Hayden Hackney’s vision and silky skills, he doesn’t provide the protection of the back four that James Garner or Harrison Armstrong naturally offer, so expect to see them reunited on Monday. Other than that, I suspect he’ll ask his team to be cautious and not to over-commit.”

Newcastle have already shown they can create chances against Everton. This time, [Matthias Jaissle](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/matthias-jaissle/) needs his players to defend properly and make those opportunities count.
