# Should Newcastle United offer Jacob Murphy a contract extension?

**Newcastle United are closing in on an agreement with Jacob Murphy over a new contract as the winger enters the final year of his contract.**

Murphy’s current deal at St James’ Park is due to expire next summer, but the 31-year-old is now close to agreeing a one-year extension, [as per the Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.com/sport/football/article-16208239/Newcastle-Jacob-Murphy-Anthony-Elanga-Nick-Woltemade-Blaydon-Races.html).

Despite the change in management as [Eddie Howe](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/eddie-howe/) left the club last summer, Jacob Murphy remains a key part of Matthias Jaissle’s squad. Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown claims [Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/newcastle-united/) are keen to keep him at the club as he is set to sign a contract soon.

## **Why Newcastle United value Jacob Murphy?**

[Speaking to Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/newcastle-united/every-manager-loves-him-expert-reveals-why-jacob-murphy-is-set-for-newcastle-deal), Brown admitted Murphy might not be the most talented player, but he is still an important member of the squad.

“Jacob Murphy isn’t the best player in the world, but every manager seems to love him,” Brown told Football Insider.

“He was a big favourite under Eddie Howe, and now Matthias Jaissle has gone in there, and he’s still playing a very important part in the side with what he can offer.

“It was a top performance against Palace where he set up the goal, and he always works hard, puts in a shift, and that’s what managers like to see.”

“He’s still an important player and he’s still very much valued by Newcastle, so he’s going to stay at the club for the foreseeable future.”

## **Is Jacob Murphy the answer to Newcastle problems?**

Lately, Jacob Murphy has come under criticism for his time at Newcastle United. He has been criticised for his end product and a lack of action going forward. Murphy is yet to score a goal this season but is still one of the first names under [Matthias Jaissle](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/matthias-jaissle/) this season. He has started six games off the last seven, indicating where he lies in the manager’s plans.

Jacob Murphy had a poor game again as Newcastle United crashed out of the Carabao Cup against Everton. On a difficult night for Newcastle, Murphy offered little to help. Despite his years of service at the club, Murphy looks far from his best years at St James’ Park.

There is no denying that Murphy is an experienced player and is liked by Matthias Jaissle. At 31, it does no harm offering a short term contract but the manager needs to manage his minutes, as he is hardly producing anything up front.
