# What lessons Matthias Jaissle drew from Carabao Cup defeat against Everton?

**Newcastle United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after suffering a [disappointing 3-1 defeat against Everton](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/10/30/everton-3-1-newcastle-united-match-report/) at Hill Dickinson Stadium.**

The Magpies created several opportunities but struggled to make them count. It was eventually the defensive errors that settled the game for them, which proved costly. James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored three for Everton before [Dan Burn](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/dan-burn/) scored a late consolation.

[Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/newcastle-united/) boss Matthias Jaissle was disappointed with the result and admitted his side needed to become more clinical in both boxes.

“We, of course, are disappointed with the result. It’s also a bit shocking at the moment because overall the game was not that bad,” [Jaissle said after the game](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/teams/newcastle-united).

“But it’s a bit the story of the season so far. In situations where it really counts, we lack the clinical approach to solve the situations.”

## **Matthias** **Jaissle highlights costly Newcastle mistakes**

Newcastle’s defensive problems were particularly evident in the first half, with two goals putting Everton in control.

The opening goal came after a poor clearance from [Amar Dedic](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/amar-dedic/) was punished, while Everton’s second came on the counter-attack after [Harvey Barnes](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/harvey-barnes/) had been denied a penalty.

Matthias Jaissle was frustrated by the way his side dealt with both situations, believing they had made life too easy for their opponents.

“Just thinking about the first one again, it’s no-risk zone,” [Jaissle said, as quoted by Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/live-blog/13025496/newcastle-transfer-news-rumours-and-gossip-live-updates-and-latest-on-deals-signings-loans-and-contracts). “We \[should\] clear the ball and nothing happens, and a couple of seconds later we concede a goal out of nothing.

“The second one is also frustrating. We deserved to have a penalty, but on the other hand, we then miss in a transition to defend our own box, which again is difficult to accept.”

The Newcastle boss also pointed to his side’s lack of composure in front of goal.

“We lack in the clinical approach to solve the situations; just think about the first one,” Jaissle said.

“This is again a no-risk zone where we clear the ball and nothing happens, and a couple of seconds later you can see the goal out of nothing.”

## **Newcastle United must learn quickly**

The defeat was another reminder of the areas Newcastle need to improve. Jaissle acknowledged that his players needed to show greater maturity.

“We need to avoid these mistakes, be more mature, be more clinical in these situations,” he said.

“This is a learning process, but you don’t get the time. We need to learn fast, especially with these young lads. Being a young team is not an excuse anymore.”

He added that Newcastle could not afford to keep giving opponents opportunities to punish them.

“It feels like the opposition is not giving us these gifts at the moment, so we need to avoid that.”
