# Newcastle United missed ‘best chance’ to win silverware after Everton defeat

**Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has admitted that his side missed their best opportunity to win silverware this season after crashing out of the Carabao Cup against Everton.**

[Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/newcastle-united/) suffered a [disappointing 3-1 defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/10/30/everton-3-1-newcastle-united-match-report/), with defensive mistakes proving costly despite Newcastle having several chances to get something from the game.

Dan Burn, who scored Newcastle’s late consolation, was disappointed with the result and believes Everton did not have to do much to punish his side.

## **Dan Burn reacts to Newcastle defeat against Everton**

[Speaking after the game](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/ckwy42nq2jg3o), Dan Burn admitted the Carabao Cup was a major opportunity for the Magpies to win a trophy this season.

“That was our best chance to win silverware. Very, very disappointed. I thought we played pretty well in large parts of it.

“Everton didn’t do too much to score goals – they came from our mistakes and we were not ruthless enough.”

Burn was disappointed with Newcastle’s inability to make their dominance count especially in the second half. Everton were able to score scoring another goal as the Magpies were pushing for a comeback.

“In the second half, when you are on top and dominating, to then concede a goal from a simple pass is frustrating. If we did tonight the things we did against Crystal Palace, it would have been a different game. We know we have a chance to make it right on Monday.”

## **Newcastle need to improve in both boxes**

Dan Burn admitted they need to be better in important moments, particularly away from home.

“It’s not for lack of effort from the lads – it’s the moments when you have to be clinical, attacking and defending. We’re not doing either of them well enough, away from home especially.

“I can understand frustrations completely. We know it was a huge opportunity for us.”

Newcastle will have another chance to take revenge on Everton as they host them again on Monday in the [Premier League](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/premier-league/). However, they missed a fair chance to silverware with some disappointing defensive errors costing them the game and the [Carabao Cup](https://readnewcastle.com/tag/carabao-cup/).
