# Newcastle United Transfer News: Matthias Jaissle Linked With Ivan Toney Reunion

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle is keen to reunite with Ivan Toney after the two had a successful partnership at Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League.

As reported by Win Win and quoted by Sport Witness, the head coach is keen to bring the striker back to Tyneside, according to Saudi journalist Khalid Al-Shenaif.

Toney came through the junior ranks of Newcastle and left the club in 2018 but has become a reliable goalscorer in recent years, first at Brentford and then in Saudi Arabia.

But the 30-year-old currently has a contract with Al Ahli until 2028 and will be on a big wage.

## **Jaissle Could Target Former Al Ahli Striker**

Toney came under Jaissle’s wing at Al Ahli before the German took the helm at Newcastle after Eddie Howe left in the summer.

The striker netted 72 goals in 93 games under Jaissle. With that in mind, Jaissle may want to bring some familiar faces into his squad at St James’ Park.

However, there is no confirmation that Newcastle are interested in signing Toney.

The forward also has lots of experience in English football and has developed a lot since leaving the Magpies, so it could be an interesting move.

## **Why a Newcastle Return Could Prove Difficult**

Newcastle would have to consider some large financial implications if they wanted to sign Toney.

It is understood that the striker is earning almost three times more than Newcastle’s highest-paid player while at Al Ahli. This could mean he would have to take a large pay cut to come back to England.

His contract also does not expire until 2028, which means any potential transfer would have to go through Al Ahli.

Newcastle have had their fair share of issues financially when trying to bring in players from Jaissle. The Magpies reportedly had to pay £9.4 million in compensation to bring in the German.

This may not be a player transfer but shows the amount of money involved in any transfers with Al Ahli.

## **Toney’s Newcastle Past**

Toney joined Newcastle from Northampton Town in 2015 as a teenager but struggled to establish himself in the first team.

Loan spells provided opportunities to develop, before Peterborough United signed him permanently in 2018.

He subsequently progressed through the divisions, joining Brentford while the club were in the Championship and helping them reach the Premier League.

Toney left Brentford for Al Ahli in 2024, securing a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

Despite his disappointment at leaving Newcastle earlier in his career, the striker has previously acknowledged why the club decided to let him go.

But it was the inspiration to get back to the Premier League, he said, and there is no bitterness.

It would be a big step forward.

Newcastle’s interest has yet to be confirmed, but any move would depend on how they wanted to shape their transfer strategy, Al Ahli’s situation and whether Toney would be interested in returning to English football.
